Writing guidelines

We accept submissions for most of the materials we publish on behalf of the Ministry of Education and for some of our international publications.

The materials we publish are read by students and teachers in early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools, kura kaupapa and wharekura.

We recommend you write for a specific series. Read about the different series we publish in our Series guidelines

To submit a story or article for consideration, email or post it to the appropriate editor or producer listed in the Series guidelines

When emailing a submission, be specific in your subject line. E.g. 'School Journal' submission or story for 'Connected'. Write a brief covering paragraph in the email and also include your postal address.

Before sending work to us, check it is in a preferred format

As soon as possible after receiving your script, we send you a letter to acknowledge its arrival.  We then let you know our initial response. We generally have a 12 week turn around for initial responses to scripts.  If you have not heard from us after two months, and wish to submit your work elsewhere, please feel free to contact us and enquire about your script.

Tips for writers
Your chances of having your work accepted by an editor will be enhanced if you consider the following notes:

  • Don’t illustrate your work or state that it is part of a series you have planned. You don’t need to lay it out like a book. Nor should you write teachers’ notes to accompany it.
  • If you have an idea for a photo story or want to send photos to accompany your work, read the Suggestions for amateur photographers
  • Write specifically for a particular series and stick to any word limits listed in the Series guidelines. Get familiar with the current series so that you:
       - don’t double up on topics that are already in print
       - get a good idea of the kind of language that’s required
       - understand the common structures of the texts (particularly for 'Ready to Read')
       - get a feel for your audience.
  • In general, rhyming narratives and stories about talking animals (except Tongan talatupu’a) are to be avoided.
  • Don’t send more than three scripts at once – sending fewer texts encourages us to consider them individually.
  • All sources of information within a script must be acknowledged, so please provide us with a list of references at the point of submission, when the work includes your own previously published works or those of third parties.
  • Let us know if you are sending us work that has appeared elsewhere. Please don't send work currently being considered by another publisher.
Finally, don’t be discouraged if we don’t accept your script. Publishers accept around two percent of the unsolicited scripts that they receive. We reject scripts for several reasons, not just because of poor writing, and we always try to give constructive feedback. You could revise your script, try it with a different publisher, or put it aside and go on with the next one. Good luck.
