Imagine That! showcases best School Journal student illustration
An exhibition celebrating the best School Journal illustrations by Massey University students opens in Wellington next week.
The Imagine That! exhibition features the winning illustrations of a competition organised by Learning Media and the Wellington-based Massey College of Creative Arts since 1999.
Students are given an illustration brief for a School Journal story, play, or poem. They work with Learning Media art editors throughout the design process and receive feedback on their initial drawings. The work judged the best is published in the School Journal, and the winning student is paid the standard industry rate for illustration.
Three of the winners – Rachel Driscoll, Ben Galbraith, and Sarah Anderson – have gone on to be honoured in the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards.
Learning Media senior designer Simon Waterfield says the live brief competition provides an opportunity for all those taking part, not just the winners, to showcase their talent.
“The competition has helped foster a number of talented illustrators. We’re always keen to see fresh talent coming through and to extend the pool of illustrators who understand how we work,” he says.
Massey University’s Dr Mike McAuley says the competition always produces a high standard of work. “It is successful because it meets the needs of everyone taking part,” he adds.
“Learning Media gives our students a lot of creative freedom, which means we can also incorporate the learning outcomes we want to achieve. It’s a win-win-win for students, teachers, and Learning Media,” he says.
Imagine That! has free entry and is open to the public from 5–15 August at The Tea Gardens, Massey University, Buckle St, Wellington.
